Of the 27 million African migrants who moved from their own countries to another in 2017, only 8 million settled outside of Africa: in Europe, but above all in the countries of the Persian Gulf and North America. The underlying reasons for African migration are to be sought in the asymmetries between expectations (of individuals and the community) and means (distribution of information and resources), which push those who already have sufficient capital to migrate to pursue the search for a wife or a husband, higher education, or a greater level of material wellbeing in an urban context: greater mobility is in fact found in the sector of skilled and better-off workers in particular.#The propensity for mobility within the continent has also been favored by the governance protocols developed by regional organizations for liberalization of economies and trade between Member States, in particular to favor employment and business.
