The Indiscreet Charm of Data: The Case of Pornhub
The online pornography market is now dominated by large tech corporations that compete for very considerable amounts of business; just think, over 30 percent of all data transferred on the Internet is porn. With the affirmation of new technologies, the platforms in the sector have focused principally on facilitating the sharing of material produced by users, while the ability to collect and analyze traffic has increasingly taken on strategic importance.#In the case of the Pornhub platform, the analytics relating to traffic data are used not only to profile users and target the offer, but also to increase advertising revenue and create a collaborative relationship with media companies. Statistics on pornography consumption are in fact extremely newsworthy and have allowed brands to obtain legitimacy in the mainstream media, contributing to destigmatizing porn and increasing the brand awareness and brand reputation of the platform.
