Vertical farming is an innovative solution to grow plants, stacked in multiple layers, in closed environments in which light, nutrients, and temperature are constantly controlled.#The main advantages of vertical farming are linked to the efficient use of nutrients, the possibility to produce all year round even in hostile environments, as well as water savings, the possibility to eliminate herbicides and pesticides, and the reduction of risks linked to the climate, atmospheric agents, and workplace accidents.#The data on the economic sustainability of vertical farming projects is still insufficient, though. Despite generalized hype and the heroic commitment to change professed by many, the conditions for profitable investments in such facilities remain to be demonstrated.
