The highway sector represents an important component of the Italian economy, both in terms of extension of the network - one of the largest in Europe - and as regards the presence of companies that have taken on an important role in other sectors of the economy and abroad. In this regard, the regulatory and public concessions sector has evolved over time in relation to both the country's social and structural conditions and the changed infrastructure and economic context.
