The Prospects for the Italian Water Pricing System
With approximately 40 euros per inhabitant per year in 2018, compared to a European average of 100 euros, Italy is at the bottom of the European rankings for investment in the water sector. The causes are to be found in the organizational deficits on the part of the operators, overly complex regulations, and the limited utilization of credit.#The current tariff method launched an intervention seeking efficiency and environmental sustainability, thus expanding the real perimeter of the water service in order to determine the tariff. In particular, the four main axes of environmental policy on which the current tariff system is based are: energy efficiency; the recovery of energy and raw materials; the reutilization of treated water for agriculture and industry; and the reduction of the use of plastic.
