Biodiversity Credits: a New Market to Protect the Planet
Biodiversity loss is accelerating at an unprecedented rate, threatening economies, health, and global well-being. The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the International Advisory Panel on Biodiversity Credits aim to integrate conservation and restoration goals into global financial flows. With 31 pilot projects across 21 countries, the IAPB’s work highlights how biodiversity credits can fund tangible solutions. However, they are no “silver bullet”: consistent public policies, stringent regulations, and a paradigm shift are essential to reconnecting the economy with nature, breaking a vicious cycle that has persisted uninterrupted since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution.
