Banks: yes to simplification, no to deregulation
At the end of April, ECB President Christine Lagarde stressed the importance of simplifying rules for the euro area. In the Ecofin work agenda for 2026, the Danish presidency has brought the issue of simplification into the spotlight, with particular attention to banking rules and supervision. Superficial commentaries have linked this European focus on simplification to the phenomenon that, in the same sphere of activity, is characterizing the stance of politicians and supervisors in the United States: deregulation. But no association could be more misguided.
