In many ways, the contemporary challenges of the global economy also regard the possible role of the state with respect to the market. Needs such as producing public goods, sustaining the investments necessary for the ecological transition, or guaranteeing the procurement of raw materials are shaping a new central role for public decision-makers with respect to the past. This is a delicate phase of transition for Western economies, in which their unity is at risk.
