Children, Not Work: China Takes a Step Back on Gender Equality

Since the data began to show that the possibility of having more children has not resulted in the expected demographic rebound, the Chinese Communist Party is trying to push women back into a more traditional role (and the associated caregiving activities) to ensure social, economic, and demographic stability. While 30 years ago three out of four women worked, and their salaries were 80 percent of those of their male colleagues, today only 60 percent of them work, earning roughly half of what their male counterparts make. Those who fight for women's rights are seen as a problem.
