Simplicity as a Managerial Discipline Against the Urge to Overcomplicate
Organizations tend to add rules, controls, and procedures even when subtraction would be more effective. Cognitive biases such as addition bias and uniqueness bias fuel organizational complicatedness, slowing decision-making, draining energy, and intensifying stress, frustration, and cognitive load. Yet striving for simplification does not mean succumbing to oversimplification. Instead, the point is removing what does not create value without compromising effectiveness, i.e., the managerial discipline of simplification. Evidence shows that simpler solutions can strengthen trust, improve customer experience, accelerate decision-making, and contribute to better performance.
