La crisi delle principali banche della Repubblica di Cipro è stato l’argomento finanziario più importante dell’anno . Le motivazioni dell’interesse internazionale nei suoi confronti non sono di carattere quantitativo dato che le cifre in ballo sono state modeste e non ci sono stati effetti sistemici. Ciò che ha più attirato l’opinione pubblica è stato il modello utilizzato per la soluzione della crisi, che ha visto un pesante coinvolgimento del governo e dello stato ciprioti, delle autorità europee e del Fondo Monetario Internazionale e che ha richiesto forti sacrifici ai depositanti non assicurati delle banche in crisi. Tale modello può rappresentare un punto di riferimento per le future risoluzioni di crisi in altri paesi.
